The Glass Memorial Library defines special collections as rare books, manuscripts, and papers that do not circulate due to their historical value, monetary value, or fragile condition. Individuals with a legitimate research purpose may use these materials in the designated reading area weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or at other hours determined by the library staff. Access to unpublished donated material may be restricted at the request of the donor. Special collections stacks are closed, and a library employee must retrieve all material for use.
Archives are non-current institutional records that are preserved for their historic value. Access restrictions apply to some records collections or portions of collections contained in the archives. Individuals with a legitimate research purpose may use unrestricted collections or portions of collections in the designated reading area on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. or at other hours determined by the library staff. Individuals with a legitimate research purpose who desire access to restricted records collections or portions of collections must have written consent from the administrator or a designated representative of the office in which the records originated. The library must receive either a hard copy of the consent form with the appropriate signature(s) or an electronic copy of the form by email originating from the appropriate administrator or their designated representative. The archives are in closed storage, and a library employee must retrieve all material for use.
The library staff will provide research assistance for on-site researchers during business hours. The library staff is unable to conduct research in answer to queries received by telephone, mail, or email. Since there are no full-time employees in archives and special collections, researchers are strongly encouraged to make an appointment so the staff may prepare for the visit.
