B.A. in Applied Linguistics

Linguistics focuses on the study of language including the diversity, structure, use, and learning of language. Through this degree, students will develop the knowledge and skills that are foundational for linguistic work in many diverse fields. The Applied Linguistics Major equips students for entry-level translation and for further studies in interdisciplinary fields related to linguistics.

• We believe the primary application of linguistics is communication, whether that is learning other languages, translating and interpreting, or teaching English
• Students chose to focus on a specific area of applied linguistics—many of which can lead toward earning a minor—to deepen their learning in practical ways
• Students will participate in an internship, often internationally, focused on language and linguistics, which will provide hands-on experience alongside experts working in the field
• This program is well-integrated both with Johnson’s Bible & Theology degree (such as through engaging with biblical languages) and the Intercultural Studies core (with classes like Anthropology and Intercultural Communication)
• With an Applied Linguistics degree from Johnson, students can go on to graduate-level studies or pursue a variety of vocational opportunities, including teaching, translation, and various forms of cross-cultural ministry

All four-year Johnson students complete two majors: one in Bible and Theology and one in their chosen field, such as Applied Linguistics. Transfer students with substantial prior coursework may complete a reduced set of Bible and Theology requirements instead of the major. Learn more about the Bible and Theology curriculum here.
