Resident Director
Job Summary
The Johnson Hall Resident Director (RD) oversees the physical state of the residence building and the physical, spiritual, educational, and emotional wellbeing of students residing within it. The RD supervises student staff (Resident Assistants) and oversees most aspects of the residence hall, including programming and activities. The RD promotes residents’ development of skills for leadership, decision-making, conflict resolution, fiscal management, problem solving, and self-discipline. The RD also participates in the spiritual life of campus by fostering intentional community that promotes discipleship and spiritual formation amongst the residents.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement, with other residence hall staff, the philosophy and objectives of the Johnson University residence life program in a building housing up to 288 students.
- Develop, integrate, and promote a community development plan for the residence hall to provide a comfortable, safe, and caring atmosphere for residents that is conducive to holistic growth and development of all students.
- Supervise, train, and support up to 18 para-professional student staff (Resident Assistants)
- Supervise residence hall operations in coordination with the Dean of Students.
- Assist in orienting all first-year, international, and transfer students to the University; contribute to the success of Genesis Weekend and all ongoing orientation activities.
- Complete administrative work in a timely manner to facilitate communication and the smooth operation of the residence hall.
- Provide pastoral counsel to residents and provide appropriate resources and referral to the University Counseling Center as needed.
- Attain a fundamental understanding of JU policies and procedures and student conduct expectations. Track policy violations and implement disciplinary procedures as warranted for minor and residence regulations in coordination with the Dean of Students. Submit appropriate paperwork to the Student Life Office and follow-up as necessary.
- Participate in on-call requirements with other professional and para-professional staff members, such as emergency situations, mental health issues, roommate conflict, etc., including such responsibilities overnight and on weekends.
- Understand and observe emergency procedures as appropriate.
- Take on centralized responsibilities in residence life-related processes such as resident assistant recruitment, training and orientation planning, roommate placements, and assessment.
- Participate in student life staff meetings and other student life department activities and events.
- Cooperate with plant services personnel to maintain the building’s physical facilities and ensure the integrity of a safe living environment. Report all issues expediently to appropriate maintenance staff.
- Coordinate with the spiritual life staff of the university to foster discipleship and spiritual growth of residents, including participation in mentoring, worship events, Chapel, and other such key institutional programs.
- Assume other responsibilities related to the residence hall program as assigned by the Dean of Students.
Knowledge and SkillRequirements
- Understanding of and strong commitment to the mission, history, purposes, and core values of Johnson University.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
- Good organizational skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
- Familiarity with Jenzabar EX or similar administrative software for higher education.
- Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, faculty, staff.
- Ability to relate to, work with, and mentor college-aged students.
- Ability to uphold university policies and procedures with pastoral sensitivity, thoughtfulness, and kindness.
Working Conditions
Office work is primarily sedentary, working at a desk in a climate controlled office. Resident Director duties also involve ample standing and walking to oversee and participate in residence hall management. This role is a live-in position with a dorm apartment provided and family meal plan. The position requires 24/7 on-call status, which involves a commitment to emergency response, including active responsibilities on nights and weekends during the academic year.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, master’s preferred; experience in college student ministry or higher education preferred; supervision, facility management, and program development experience preferred.
