Mechanical and Utility Systems Lead

The Facilities department at Johnson University is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Mechanical and Utility Systems Lead.  This position is a full-time hands-on position that works within a team of other trade leads in maintaining all University housing units and buildings.  The position would be responsible for overseeing full-time technicians.  Candidate must have HVAC/mechanical experience.  Must have a genuine heart for kingdom work and be willing to train, mentor, and work with student workers.  Qualified applicants may submit a resume to .

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist Director with scheduling of repairs and periodic maintenance tasks
  • Evaluate areas of responsibility to recommend and implement equipment repairs, renovations, and replacement as needed
  • Plan, organize workload, and oversee daily operations of Mechanical & Utility Systems Department
  • Utilize the TMA work order system to efficiently plan and implement department repair and preventative maintenance work
  • Oversee training and management of all full-time hourly employees and work-study students assigned to area
  • Ensure assigned tasks are performed with quality and efficiency maintaining state and local codes and standards
  • Order supplies and parts as required for daily operations while observing Johnson’s accounting policies
  • Coordinate maintenance work with our customers and other maintenance departments as needed
  • Coordinate and manage quality and efficiency of routine outside contractor work
  • Regularly perform maintenance and project tasks as needed to complete work orders and meet project deadlines

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage inventory of department tools, equipment, shop supplies, and chemicals
  • While performing required work tasks, maintain compliance with all applicable health, safety and environmental regulations standards and requirements, University policies and best management practices
  • Participate on the JU Gas Master Meter Utility committee per TN Regulatory Agency regulations and maintain JBC Gas Master Meter Utility Required Tasks certification
  • Participate in regular campus safety training sessions
  • Carry a university radio and cell phone while on duty to communicate with Director and the Plant office and respond to emergencies
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Experienced knowledge of and ability to use a range of construction equipment and tools
  • Experienced knowledge of and ability to service residential and commercial HVAC, Plumbing & Utility systems
  • Experienced knowledge of and ability to service building HVAC control systems
  • Able to read and comprehend manuals, technical data, and engineering prints and specifications
  • Able and willing to further education in specific requested mechanical areas of specialty
  • Able to analyze, organize, implement, and coordinate a variety of work assignments
  • Able to communicate tasks to be accomplished to subordinates understandably and cordially

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, kneel and reach in the normal operation of required tasks
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs routinely, climb ladders, and crawl in tight places without assistance

  • Duties may require exposure to stressful and/or dangerous emergency situations
  • Travel may be required for training
  • Use of lift equipment is required
  • Must be able to work with contact and exposure to industry-standard construction chemicals

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 6 years Mechanical, HVAC, and Utility Maintenance experience and prefer college/technical degree
  • Prefer project management and employee supervisory experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Lift operators training certification (current or within 1 year of employment)
  • JU Gas Master Meter Utility Required Tasks certification (provided by JU)
  • Aquatic Facility Operator training certification (within 1 year of employment)
  • Prefer TN State Mechanical Contractor License
  • TN State Limited License Plumbing Certification
  • EPA Universal Refrigerant Usage Certification
