Undergraduate Merit Scholarships

President's Scholarship

Amount/Description:
Amount varies. Based on highest ACT or SAT score and final cumulative GPA from high school or college. College transcript is used in lieu of a high school transcript for those who were enrolled in an institution of higher education seeking a degree and who attempted and completed 12 credit hours of course work.

Requirements:
• Must be full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester)
• Initial scholarship is awarded the first year
• After first year awarded, the student must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
• Awards are tracked after every two semesters

For students not awarded a President’s Scholarship their initial year, if a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA is achieved after their first year, the student may qualify for $1,000 annually for consecutive years. If a 4.0 cumulative GPA is achieved after their first year, the student may qualify for $2,000 annually for consecutive years. The student must maintain a 3.0 or better for continuation of the award.

This award is limited to four years of attendance at Johnson University Tennessee.

Bible Bowl Scholarship

Amount/Description:
For those who have competed and placed at national, state, or Johnson University competitions, awards are assessed based on review of the certificates upon submission. The award varies based on level of competition and placement as follows regardless of junior or senior high level:

Requirements:

Johnson University also offers a participation award of $500. Requirements for this one-year award are:

  • Minimum participation of three years in church-organized Bible Bowl competition at the senior high level.
  • Certificate amounts take priority over three-year participation award.
  • Complete the Bible Bowl Scholarship Application.

Requirements for certificate amount:

  • The amount is determined by the level of competition. The awards cannot be stacked with multiple certificates and scholarship is awarded for the highest placement during years of competition. Please contact the Financial Aid Office to discuss.

Yu Ping China Scholarship

Amount/Description:
$500—$1,500 annually (select students)

Requirements:

  • Often awarded to a sophomore or junior.
  • Awarded to a student who demonstrates a strong personal interest in China.
  • Awarded to a student who holds the greatest potential for impacting China.

Preaching/Public Speaking Competition Scholarship

Amount/Description:
For those who have competed and placed at national, state, or local competitions. Awards range from $500 to $6,000 (over four years) as follows:

Requirements:

Johnson awards scholarships to the following preaching competitions:
• TCTC – state amounts according to the table.
• PreachFEST – amounts according to the Dean of the School of Congregational Ministry.
• Preacher Boy – local amounts.
• Ohio Teens for Christ – national or state placement, or as according to certificates presented.
• Stone Campbell Journal – $2,500 one time for freshman year.

The PreachFEST scholarships that are awarded vary in amounts. If a student receives $2,000 or less it will be awarded at the beginning of their freshman year at Johnson. If the award is above $2,000 it will be split over the four years of their undergraduate work. Scholarships will be awarded based on the highest placement.

Music/Drama Competition Scholarship

Amount/Description:
For those who have competed and placed at state, camp, and local competitions. One-time awards range from $100 to $1,000.

Ashley S. Johnson Minority Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: $1,000 annually

Student will be eligible based on their self-reported ethnicity during the enrollment process, their academic transcripts, and/or the Registrar’s survey. In addition, the student must be a full-time degree-seeking student.

Amount: $1,200 per academic year up to a maximum of $4,800 for four years.

Requirements:
• Sophomore, junior, or senior minority student pursuing a teaching degree. Recipient will be selected by Teacher Education Committee.

Service Scholarships

International Missionary Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: 1/3 to 1/2 tuition annually

Requirements:
• Parent(s) serves as an international missionary (outside the United States)
• Full-time degree-seeking student

Additional Details:
• Students will receive qualifying institutional aid first.
• Once aid is determined, if it does not exceed $2,000 annually, the student will receive 1/2 of tuition.
• If aid exceeds $2,000, the student will receive 1/3 of tuition.
• Total institutional aid cannot exceed annual tuition.
• Cannot be used in conjunction with Christian Ministry Scholarship or International Scholarship.

Christian Ministry Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: $1,000-$2,000 annually

Requirements:
• Open to dependent undergraduate students (incoming freshman – rising senior) whose parent(s) meet the following within ministry:
• Works 30 hours or more per week in ministry.
• The ministry is the family’s primary source of income.
• Full-time degree-seeking student.
• Verification of parent’s or applicant’s employment with documents of income.
• Cannot be used in conjunction with a Missionary Scholarship.

If student receives $2,000 or more in institutional aid annually, the student is only eligible to receive $1,000 annually.

Recruitment Team Member Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:

Qualifying Scholarships

Married Student Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: $500 annually

General Requirements:
• Married student household (married at least three years, three-year anniversary must fall within academic year)
• Full-time degree-seeking student
• One award per household

Tuition Reduction Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: 1/3 tuition annually

Requirements:
• Married student (married at least three years)
• Both spouses enrolled full-time and seeking degrees
• One award per household
• Cannot be used in conjunction with Married Student Scholarship

Johnson Family Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: $400 per student

Requirements:
• Have either two or more children at Johnson or a child and parent at Johnson University Tennessee. Cannot be used in conjunction with Married Student or Tuition Reduction Scholarships

Tuition Exchange Program Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Johnson University is a member of the Tuition Exchange scholarship program through which dependents of eligible employees may attend other Tuition Exchange institutions through a reciprocal scholarship program. Tuition Exchange scholarships are not guaranteed and are based on a balance between students exported and imported to the institution. Further information is available at Tuitionexchange.org.

Intercollegiate Tuition Waiver Program Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: Varies based on length of employment

This scholarship is available to the dependents of all full-time employees of participating Christian colleges and universities. Johnson University Tennessee awards are unlimited. The amount is 1/4 tuition during the first year of employment, 1/2 tuition during the second year, 3/4 tuition during the third year, and full tuition during the fourth and subsequent years of employment.

International Student Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: 1/3 to ½ tuition annually

Requirements:
• Student from foreign country
• Full-time degree-seeking student
• Not eligible for United States government aid
• Can work on work-study program earning wages to cover half room and board
• Approval from Financial Aid

Stipulations to receiving International Student Scholarship:
• Student will receive qualifying institutional aid first. Please contact the Financial Aid Office to determine other Johnson awards that can be used in conjunction with this scholarship.
• Once aid is determined, if it does not exceed $1,000 annually, the student will receive 1/2 of tuition.
• If aid exceeds $1,000, the student will receive 1/3 of tuition.
• Total institutional aid cannot exceed annual tuition.

Need-Based Scholarships

Johnson Gap Scholarship

Amount/Qualifications:
Amount: Up to $3,000 annually, four years only

Requirements:
• Full-time degree-seeking student (minimum of 12 credits per semester)
• Initial scholarship is awarded the first year. After the first year, the student must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 each semester to remain eligible in the subsequent semester. Awarding procedure:
• The amount awarded is determined by the Financial Aid Office. It is calculated based on the individual facts and circumstances of each student.

Graduate Scholarships

Center for Global Studies Department

Amount/Description:
Ph.D. in Leadership Studies Scholarship: The amount of the award ranges up to $2,500 per academic year. To be eligible the student must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, be a U.S. Non-resident, and identify financial need. This scholarship is awarded during all semesters by the Center for Global Studies Department. The scholarship amount is determined after review by the scholarship committee. All awards require the student to maintain full-time enrollment status (6 credits per term).

Counseling Department

Amount/Description:
The following scholarships are awarded during the spring semester by the Counseling Department. The scholarships are annual awards that start in the fall. All awards require the student to maintain full-time enrollment status (at least 9 credits per term).

• Program Scholarship: $1,500 per year. Criteria considered for the Program Scholarship include:
• Academic (GPA, MAT/GRE scores, previous academic performance in GCP)
• Contribution to diversity (enhancement of diversity within the GCP, including but not limited to race, gender, socioeconomic, age, and background)
• Professional Promise (potential for success as a professional counselor, vision and passion for field, unique interests within ministry of counseling)
• Graduate Assistantship: $2,000 per year. The student engages in professional development activities for a prescribed number of hours per week under the direct supervision and mentorship of FT faculty members.

Education Department: Holistic Education

Amount/Description:
The following scholarship is awarded each spring for the upcoming academic year. The award is earned during the fall (50%) and spring semester (50%). The Teacher Education Graduate Committee is responsible for selecting the award recipients.

To obtain the award the candidate must have passed all chapels attempted and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The award amount depends on the candidate’s cumulative GPA as follows:

Amount/Description:
The following scholarship is awarded during all semesters by the Intercultural Studies Department. The scholarship amount is determined after review by the scholarship committee. All awards require the student to maintain full-time enrollment status (9 credits per term).

• Graduate Intercultural Studies Scholarship: The amount of the award ranges up to $2,000 per academic year. To be eligible the student must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA, meet specific Christian service requirements, and identify financial need.
