Confucius Institute Scholarship

The Confucius Classroom, in partnership with universities in China, offers scholarships for American students to study in China for eight weeks, a semester, or a year.  It also offers scholarships for students who would like to pursue a degree.

Confucius Institute Scholarship for International Students in China

Exempt from tuition fee and accommodation fees. Comprehensive medical insurance and benefit plan are provided. Living Expenses: RMB1400/month. Settlement subsidy: RMB1000/semester or RMB1500/academic year. The eligibility of the student for this scholarship will be reevaluated each year.


Basic Requirements:

  1. Outstanding students from Confucius Institutes (Classrooms) worldwide
  2. Foreign teachers who are teaching or planning to teach Chinese as a second language
  3. Students who received distinguished grades from the Chinese Examination series held by Confucius Institute Headquarters
  4. Outstanding Contestants in “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition
  5. Applicants who meet the requirements of other Confucius Institute Headquarters agreements
  6. Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens in good health, age 30 and below

Application Materials (in duplicate):

  1. Completed “Application Form for Confucius Institute Scholarship,” filled out and printed both in Chinese and English. The form can be downloaded from the Hanban website and/or the Confucius Institute Online at or
  2. A photocopy of the passport page with your photo on it
  3. Copy of diploma and transcript (Documents in language other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized translations in Chinese or English)
  4. Certificates of Chinese Proficiency (It could be the certificates of Chinese language learning or HSK)
  5. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Record Form
  6. Personal Statements, indicating the applicant’s Chinese learning background, study plan, and goals in China, etc. The statement should be no less than 200 words, printed in either Chinese or English and signed by the applicant.
  7. Applicants under the age of 18 should submit a notarized guarantee certificate of the guardian and emergency contact of their legal guardians.

Application Procedures:

  1. Log onto the website, click “Scholarship” at the top of the webpage, choose “Application Procedures for Confucius Institute Scholarship,” and then finish your application as shown.
  2. Applicant will get his/her username, password, and application number. This message will be sent to your email address.
  3. Please use the given username and password to log on the online system; then fill in and print the application form.

The deadline for application for Confucius Institute Scholarship is March 31 at 12:00 a.m.
