In September, the entire student body took one day and worked for individuals and nonprofit organizations in and around Knoxville, Tennessee, as part of the annual community service event known as K12.
The annual community service day began in 2009. The pilot project was titled K9, i.e. “Knoxville 2009.” From the beginning students embraced the idea of canceling classes to interact and serve the greater Knoxville community. Projects have included landscaping at Beardsley Community Farm, cleaning apartments at Westview Towers through Community Action Committee, painting lamp posts at ChildHelp, folding clothing and sorting toys for The Salvation Army, and clearing debris and brush at individual homes.
