2017/18 JUTN Athletics Recap

basketball photoIt was a great year for sports at Johnson University Tennessee! Here are some highlights from each team's season:

Baseball (Coach Ben Fair)

The team finished fourth in the Mid-East Region Tournament and three players finished in the top 15 in the nation for batting average! Congratulations to Chase White, Chase Burke, and Caleb Lee for 1st Team All-Region and Chandler Viscardis and Jonathan Howard for 2nd Team All-Region.

Men’s Basketball (Coach Brandon Perry)

The team finished in first place for the regular season and second at the Mid-East Region Tournament. The team received an NCCAA National Tournament bid for the second time in three years and finished in fourth place at the National Tournament, losing in overtime in the semi-final game. Taylor Gilpin was named 1st Team All-American and 1st Team All-Region; Kenny White was named 2nd Team All-American and 1st Team All-Region. Kenton Gullion was named 2nd Team All-Region, with Cody McClain receiving Honorable Mention and Newcomer of the Year. Taylor Gilpin and Kenny White have both scored more than 1500 points in their careers. Congratulations to Coach Perry for being named Mideast Region Coach of the Year and National Coach of the Year!

Women’s Basketball (Coach Ashley Davis)

Several players earned honors this season, including Lori St. John (2nd Team All-American, 1st Team All-Region, and Mid-East Region Most Valuable Player); Taylor Thurman (2nd Team All-Region); Keelie Lusby (Mid-East Region Honorable Mention); and Hannah Stinson (Mid-East Region Honorable Mention). Scholar athletes: Kayleigh Reed Morris, Rachel Warren.

Cross Country (Coach Sho Gray)

The men’s team ranked sixth at nationals and the women’s team ranked fourth, with Noah Johnstone finishing fifteenth and Morgan Hume sixth. Freshman Olivia Anderson ranks fourth on Johnson’s all-time cross country record!  Scholar athletes: Paige Peterson, Danielle Keehner, Michael Rhodenbaugh.

Men’s Golf (Coach Weldon Davis)

The team received the All-Scholar Team Award. Scholar athletes: Morgan Eggers, Korey Whitsett, Ben Faust, Nick Redenour, Tyler Starbuck, Hunter Long, Joseph Tempest.

Men’s Soccer (Coach Spenser Proctor)

The team finished second in the Mid-East Regional Tournament. Willy Phiri, Will Wilson, Brant Rothbauer, and Isaac Sinkhorn were 1st Team All-Region and Kyle Hathaway and Caleb Moore were 2nd Team All-Region. Scholar athletes: Will Wilson, Isaac Morris, Jason Schnackenburg.

Women’s Soccer (Coach Mason McNally)

Congrats to Coach McNally for being named Mid-East Region Coach of the Year! Several honors for these players, including Lori St. John (Mid-East Region Player of the Year and 1st Team All-American); Abby Baron, Lori St. John, Emily Raugust, and Jailie Bullock (1st Team All-Region); Mallory Galloway and Maddie Holt (Honorable Mention). Scholar athletes: Shelby Green and Emily Raugust.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis (Coach Seth Hale)

The women’s team received the All-Scholar Team Award; scholar athletes are Danielle Keehner and Madi Buchanan. Danielle Keehner was named Player of the Week. Men’s team scholar athletes: Michael Rhodenbaugh, Ethan Smith, Matt Nordstrom.

Volleyball (Coach Robin Vannoy)

The team finished third at the Mid-East Regional Tournament and received an at-large bid to the NCCAA National Tournament (the first time since 2005) and finished eighth. Madyson Smith was named 1st Team All-Region with Alyssa Fithian an honorable mention. Brianna Connaster received Mid-East Region Libero of the year. Congratulations to Coach Vannoy who received Coach of the Year! Scholar athlete: Kandace Troxell.
