Johnson Spotlight is posted every Wednesday and seeks to connect the hardworking people at Johnson University Tennessee who do so much behind the scenes to our students, alumni, and friends. This week is unique due to the fact that it’s a two-in-one Spotlight! We decided to feature the coaches of our men’s and women’s basketball teams. Take a minute to get to know Doug Karnes and Kevin Hall! (in photo: Doug on the left and Kevin on the right.)

First up, Doug Karnes:

What is your title/position at Johnson University?

Full-time Adjunct Associate Professor and Women’s Basketball Coach

How long have you worked at Johnson University?

From 1979-2004; 2006-2014.

What is your favorite food?

Mexican food--any.

What are your hobbies?

Fly fishing, camping, and traveling.


What would you do if you had a million dollars?

Donate some to Cookson Hills Christian Ministries. Then I would retire.

What is one interesting fact about yourself?

I am a badminton freak.

What is your favorite quote/scripture?

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

  Three years

What is your favorite food?

Anything Chipotle.

What would you do if you had a million dollars?

Invest half of it wisely so we could gain more to help others and contribute the rest of it to Johnson athletics growth.

What is one interesting fact about yourself?

I lived, coached, and was married in Copenhagen, Denmark.

What is the best gift you ever received?

The loves of my life: my wife and children.

What is your favorite quote/scripture?

Proverbs 16:1-3 “To humans belong the plans of the heart, but from the Lord comes the proper answer of the tongue. All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
